HKIA passenger throughput rises 28-fold in January

Passenger volume surged 466% YoY to 7.6 million in the past 12 months.

Passenger throughput at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) increased by 28 times year-on-year in January reaching 2.1 million as travel restrictions have been relaxed.

In a statement, the Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) said the airport handled over 80,000 passengers daily at peak, which is around 40% of the passenger levels before the pandemic.

Meanwhile, flight movements rose by 34.9% YoY to 16,215.

“Due to the relaxation of travel restrictions, all passenger segments experienced significant growths, particularly Hong Kong residents, compared to the same month last year,” AAHK said.

“The re-opening of the Mainland market to international travel also drove a recovery in passenger traffic between Hong Kong and Mainland China,” it said, adding that strong passenger demand was seen in the second half of the month due to the Chinese New Year holiday.

Travel to and from Southeast Asia and Japan had the highest increases.

On a 12-month basis, passenger volume jumped 466% YoY to 7.6 million, whilst flight movements were down 18.2% to 142,920.
