Cycle track to be completed by end-2013
It'll be between Ma On Shan and Sheung Shui.
In a report, Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung says construction of a cycle track between Ma On Shan and Sheung Shui is underway and is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
In a written reply to lawmakers today, Mr Cheung also said work on the section from Tuen Mun to Sheung Shui will start at the end of the year, to be completed by the end of 2016. The remaining sections of the proposed 104km recreational cycle track network are in preliminary or detailed design stages.
The Civil Engineering & Development Department is developing the network across the New Territories in phases, including a backbone section of around 82 km running from Ma On Shan to Tsuen Wan via Shatin, Tai Po, Fanling, Sheung Shui, Yuen Long and Tuen Mun, plus several branching-off sections totalling around 22 km.
Asked about whether cycle tracks were planned for harbourfront areas, Prof Cheung said the Government will carefully consider the feasibility of providing cycle tracks and related facilities where circumstances allow, for recreational or short-distance travel.
For formerly closed border areas, a 2010 study by the Planning Department proposed two sections connecting with the cycle track network along Castle Peak Road in the New Territories, and the future Ping Che / Ta Kwu Ling New Development Area via Lin Ma Hang Road. The study's feasibility has not yet been examined, and there are no concrete plans at the moment, he said.
"Given the increasing popularity of cycling, the Transport & Housing Bureau will explore ways to improve and enhance the existing 'cycling-friendly' policy and measures," he said.
