Pteris Global's baggage handling system for Canadian airport off to a good start

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport one of the first in the country to streamline the baggage drop-off process.

Mainboard-listed Pteris Global Limited (“Pteris Global”), an integrated airport logistics system provider, is pleased to announce that its newly delivered baggage handling system (“BHS”), which officially went live on 30 October 2011 with the opening of Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport’s new terminal, handled over 3,000 bags on its first day of operations and contributed to the success and seamless passenger experience of the new terminal launch.

The newly opened terminal at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is among the first in Canada to streamline the baggage drop-off process, thereby enhancing customer service by conveniently allowing passengers to process luggage at a single location without having to locate different bag drops for domestic, trans-border or international destinations.

“Baggage systems have become much more complex in the last 10 years. There are now many layers of technology on top of the conveyor system controls. Pteris understands the complex layers and assembled a team that met the challenge, providing a high quality and efficient system”, said Mr. Brian Derich, Senior Project Manager and BHS specialist of MMM Group. “The mechanical quality of the equipment coupled with the software skills of the Pteris engineers made the installation a success”, added Mr. Derich.

Local Canadian media, the Winnipeg Free Press, reported that every piece of baggage is x-rayed, some items twice, using a Singapore-designed system (Pteris Global) housed in the massive baggage-handling facility located below the arrivals area. It, too, is much more energy-efficient than the old system. The belts in the old terminal ran full-time, but computer controls in the new terminal ensure belts run only when necessary.

We have been informed by the local airport consultant in Winnipeg that this is the first time that bags reached the arrival carousels before passengers arrive at the arrival hall.”

Successfully commissioned and handed over to the Winnipeg Airports Authority Inc. (“WAA”) on 13 July 2011, this approximately S$17.2 million turnkey project was fully operationally and ready ahead of its official opening on 30 October 2011.
