High demand for engineers amidst key infra projects and Smart City transition

It’s a good time to be an electrical, mechanical, structural and building services engineer.

With a slew of ongoing infrastructure projects thanks to the Belt & Road Initiative, a growing number of construction, property and engineering jobs are available on Hong Kong’s job market for 2018, according to Randstad Salary Snapshot 2018.

Electrical, mechanical, structural and building service engineers are expected to be highly sought-after as the Capital Works Reserve Funds similarly increased its projected spending to $130.8b in 2021-2022.

Moreover, as the city rolls out its Smart City plans, construction innovation professionals specialising in digital transformation, information modeling, robotics, manufacturing will be in high demand which is poised to generate high volume relocation from European countries like the UK and Australia.

The report also notes that technical skills are no longer the sole consideration for employment in the construction and engineering sector as recruiters place growing primacy on soft skills which include linguistic fluency in Mandarin, regional mobility, strong communication skills and an entrepreneurial mindset.
