HKHS network infrastructure upgrade brings an operational edge
Its initiative earned an award at the HKB Technology Excellence Awards.
Known as the city’s “housing laboratory," the Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) continually evolves, pioneering innovative solutions that keep pace with the times. Its innovative initiative to enhance its network infrastructure has been recognised with an award at the HKB Technology Excellence Awards. This recognition underlines the operational efficiency gains achieved by HKHS, marking the dawn of a new era of connectivity.
In a strategic move, HKHS transitioned from traditional Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks to cutting-edge Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) technology, an advancement that reaped manifold benefits. This transition translated to increased bandwidth at reduced costs, elevated corporate network availability, fortified security, and centralised network management.
The adoption of SD-WAN, a technology that optimises corporate network usage by tapping into cost-effective, high-bandwidth internet connections, was a pivotal moment for HKHS. It introduced high-availability configurations, ensuring an uninterrupted network environment for its workforce. SD-WAN also significantly bolstered HKHS’s cybersecurity posture, with robust encryption mechanisms and meticulous access controls enhancing the organisation’s resilience against cyber threats.
Integral to the success of the project was the centralised management afforded by SD-WAN. With a unified view of network operations, the organisation could streamline network management, prioritise mission-critical applications, and fortify its defences against potential cyber intrusions. This approach not only bolstered control but also reduced vulnerabilities, fostering a secure digital environment.
Addressing the escalating demand for scalable and adaptable wireless networks in the era of IoT and digital transformation, HKHS amplified its corporate wireless bandwidth and security using the Aruba Central Management Tools. This enhancement, coupled with the adoption of 802.11ax (WIFI 6) technology capable of speeds up to 1200M, fortified the organisation's Wi-Fi infrastructure. This future-ready upgrade facilitates enhanced productivity and efficiency, poised to accommodate the impending business expansion.
Remote work and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies are defining features of the modern age. Consequently, the importance of a robust Wi-Fi network is paramount. The modernised wireless infrastructure supported a diverse range of devices, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets, ensuring seamless collaboration and streamlined operations.
The successful execution of this network modernisation initiative required meticulous planning, precise execution, and diligent management. The process encompassed a comprehensive spectrum of activities, from network assessments and vendor selection for SD-WAN integration to wide-scale implementation and extensive employee training. Adherence to effective project management principles, including consistent communication, proactive risk mitigation, and performance monitoring, was a critical factor in the initiative's successful outcome.
At the heart of HKHS's network modernisation initiative is a resonance with the emerging proptech trend, a movement reshaping property development and management. This initiative reflects the digital transformation journey of the property sector, highlighting the significance of an advanced network infrastructure as the cornerstone of progress. With a relentless commitment to innovation and excellence, HKHS aspires to elevate operational efficiency and customer experience through the embrace of digital tools and technologies.
This initiative earned HKHS the Network and Broadband - Public Organization award at the HKB Technology Excellence Awards. The award symbolises the organisation's dedication to upholding the spirit of innovation in its pursuit of delivering quality housing and services to the people of Hong Kong.
