HKPF intensifies cybercrime capability

Opens a cybersecurity center to combat Internet crimes.

The Hong Kong Police Force said the cybersecurity center will be manned by 27 police professionals within the ranks of Police Constable and Chief Inspector. The center, which opened Dec. 7, will analyze cyberattacks by gathering related intelligence, provide an immediate response to cyberattacks, undertake research and perform security audits.

It will support the police force's Technology Crime Division's daily operations in preventing and detecting computer crime by monitoring the flow of data traffic within major infrastructure systems. This will help strengthen collaboration between the police, government and local and overseas stakeholders when critical infrastructure comes under cyberattack.

"The incidence of cyberattack is increasing,” said police Commissioner Tsang Wai-hung.

He noted that the police recognize the need to respond to the worldwide cybercrime phenomenon, particularly cyberattacks aimed at critical infrastructure, by enhancing its readiness and capability to counter these threats.
