Hong Kong going big on recycling
Government creates committee to develop recycling industry.
The “Steering Committee to Promote the Sustainable Development of the Recycling Industry” will tackle the development of the recycling industry within the region. It is chaired by Chief Secretary for Administration Carrie Lam.
The committee will review Hong Kong's recycling operation, discuss industry challenges and government support measures.
Mrs. Lam said the committee's goal is to boost waste reduction at source and promote the development of the recycling industry. She noted that for recycling to take-off, it is essential to collaborate with government agencies as the operation of the recycling industry involves different areas of work.
The committee will later review the current situation of collection and disposal of recyclables; related policies and support measures, and will try to identify proactive approaches to facilitate the industry's development. The latter will include the possibility of setting up a “recycling fund.”
