Could you imagine a floating cemetery for Hong Kong?
Should be ideal for the Cheung Yeung and Ching Ming Festivals.
Proposed by Hong Kong-based architecture firm Bread Studio, the “Floating Eternity Cemetery” is envisioned as a huge floating columbarium that can hold 370,000 urns. It is seen as a solution to Hong Kong’s land shortage where real estate for the living is the most expensive on the planet.
The urns containing the ashes of the deceased will be kept in a rotating wall that will travel along a rail. This set-up will give all niches an equal chance for the best position, which is an important aspect of feng shui.
The cemetery will be designed like a cruise ship. Plans call for the ship to be anchored along Hong Kong's coastline. The cemetery could have have a garden, a deck for picnicking and a restaurant.
These amenities should be popular during Hong Kong’s Cheung Yeung and Ching Ming Festival where residents pay homage to their deceased ancestors by spending their day at cemeteries. Visitors will be allowed to bring food on board the ship.
