The iconic Peak Tram is 125 years old
Range of activities celebrate historic anniversary.
Limited edition tickets were issued for the anniversary. A Peak Tram themed board game was also created. There is also a new bear mascot called Bobo and a paper conductor doll, all designed by Douglas Young, a Hong Kong based designer.
During its beginnings, the tram was designed as timber carts powered by steam. A round trip journey today on its computerized and aluminum car costs HK$40 or US$$5. A single ride a century ago cost from 5 to 30 cents.
The steep-climbing Peak Tram affords a uniquely spectacular perspective of Hong Kong and is one of the city’s most symbolic attractions. It is an icon in Hong Kong.
The Peak Tram opened in 1888 for the exclusive use of the British governor and The Peak’s residents. Today, however, it can be enjoyed by everyone as the steepest funicular railway in the world.
The journey takes only seven minutes and is a visual experience to remember as skyscrapers glide past at what appear to be impossible angles while the tram makes its ascent.
The Peak Tram operates from 7:00 am to midnight daily, departing at 10- to 15-minute intervals from the lower Peak Tram terminus located on Garden Road in Central. Exact change is required if paying by cash and Octopus cards are accepted.
