Syndicate already shut down.
According to a report, customs officers have shut down a cigarette smuggling syndicate and seized cigarettes worth $2.8 million, with a duty potential of $2 million.
Officers arrested 19 men and five women aged 16 to 65, and found a total of about 1.2 million cigarettes at 18 storage points. Eight vehicles used for conveying and storing them were also seized.
The department has completed a month-long city-wide crackdown to combat the illicit cigarette trade, with a particular focus on cross-boundary vehicles.
