What are the social distancing measures in effect in the next 2 weeks?

The government tightened the social measures due to rising coronavirus cases.

The Hong Kong government is imposing the “most stringent level” of social distancing measures from 7 to 20 January due to the increasing number of coronavirus infections. 

"The COVID-19 epidemic situation in Hong Kong has evolved drastically on the previous day. The virus has spread into the local community due to several imported cases concerning exempted air crew members, and silent transmission chains may have already existed in the community,” a government spokesman said Wednesday.

“Hong Kong now faces substantial risk of a major outbreak. The Government must adopt stringent measures in the coming two weeks with a view to containing the epidemic as early as possible,” the spokesman said.

Catering businesses are prohibited from selling or supplying food for dining-in from 6pm to 4:59 am but they can still sell food for takeaway and delivery premises. The maximum number of persons per table for Type B, C, and D Modes of Operation will be reduced to two, four, and six, respectively. 

Live performances, dancing activities were not allowed in catering premises, whilst karaoke or mahjong-tin kau should also be suspended. Bars or pubs should be closed.

Amusement game centres, bathhouses, fitness centres, places of amusement, places of public entertainment, rooms for holding social gathering, beauty parlours, and clubs or night clubs must suspend operations.

Operations of karaoke establishments, mahjong-tin kau premises, massage establishments, sports premises, swimming pools, cruise ships, and event premises, were likewise suspended.

Club-houses, and hotels or guesthouses should also comply with relevant restrictions including closing bars or pubs and other establishments mentioned above. Catering should also comply with applicable requirements including the suspension of dine-in at 6pm.

Wearing of face masks are mandatory in public transport carriers, Mass Transit Railway paid areas, or in public places, save for outdoor public places in country parks and special areas.

Group gathering of more than four persons in public places will continue during the 14-day period, according to the government. The same applies to group gathering in catering business and scheduled premises. 

Local tours are also suspended, it said.

The government will review the measures after a week if the measures were effective in containing the coronavirus to consider suitable adjustments.
