But job market may be difficult for foreigners.

According to the latest Hudson Report: Employment Trends, Hong Kong industries with the strongest intentions to hire include Banking & Financial Services where 52.9% intend to hire more staff this quarter, followed by Consumer (44.8%) and IT&T (28.2%).

“Despite a global industry trend towards lowering headcounts, demand in Banking & Financial Services reflects the sector returning to a business-as-usual hiring pattern. Where there was previously a sinking lid on headcount, roles are now being replaced immediately.

We are however observing the job market becoming increasing difficult for foreign workers without proficiency in Mandarin, especially as more and more roles require interaction with China,” said Mr Pownall.

In a sign of a maturing contracting market, the Report showed an increase of 20.1pp in intention to add short-term contract staff in Banking & Financial Services. released today reveals that most companies in Hong Kong (52.6%) now intend to keep headcount steady, an increase of 5.8 percentage points, while intentions to increase headcount are down 6.7pp to 40.7%.

“Intentions to hold headcount at existing levels have hovered consistently at around 50.0% for the past two years, and while hiring intentions have eased slightly, the employment outlook is very encouraging,” said Tony Pownall, General Manager, Hudson Hong Kong. 

“With the majority of employers holding staff numbers steady, Hudson is seeing a growing focus by organisations on talent management and retaining top performers. Developing high potential employees are top of the HR agenda,” added Mr Pownall.
