Hong Kongers sceptical of tech progress despite recognising future potential
About half of citizens said technological progress harms people's lives.
Though Hong Kong consumers and citizens are adapting to changes like globalisation and modern technology, they still long for a sense of familiarity amidst these shifts, according to the Ipsos Global Trends report titled "In Search of a New Consensus: From Tension to Intention."
The report revealed that six in 10 Hong Kongers believe globalisation benefits the region. Yet, despite embracing these global changes, around eight in 10 still want Hong Kong to return to "the way it used to be."
In addition to globalisation, technology plays a crucial role in shaping the future. The survey found that seven in 10 Hong Kongers agree that modern technology is essential for solving future problems.
However, nearly half (48%) expressed concerns that technological progress is negatively impacting people's lives. When it comes to consumption, the survey underscored the importance of brand trust and appeal.
The findings showed that 84% of consumers are likely to trust a new product from a brand they already know, while 61% are willing to pay extra for a brand that resonates with them. In healthcare, there has also been a shift in behaviour.
A significant 86% of respondents are actively doing more to look after their mental well-being, reflecting a growing focus on self-care.
Moreover, 80% said they prefer to research healthcare information themselves, rather than solely relying on their doctor’s advice.
On a global scale, Ipsos found that many people feel overwhelmed by the complex geopolitical, economic, and technological changes occurring around them.
This sense of uncertainty highlights a need for balance between embracing innovation and maintaining a connection to familiar traditions and values.
