Fast facts: How Hong Kong GDP benefits from internet
We were surprised it was this much.
According to Googlegram 2013, the Internet contributed 96 billion HKD to the Hong Kong economy in 2009. Growing almost twice as fast as the territory’s overall GDP, the Internet economy’s success is likely a result of the government’s investment in building a robust broadband infrastructure and ensuring the free flow of information online.
If the government spurs online shopping and e-commerce exports, maintains the free flow of information online and takes steps to incubate startups, the Internet economy could achieve a potential that is 17 billion HKD greater than what's currently anticipated for 2015.
That’s roughly a quarter of the amount the Hong Kong government spends on education today.
