Google plans to help incubate Hong Kong tech startups
Will partner with the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said his company plans to tap into Hong Kong’s “natively entrepreneurial” culture. He noted that the city has excellent connectivity and is an excellent place to do business.
During a speech this week at the campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Schmidt said Google will work with CUHK to offer mentorship to young entrepreneurs and sponsor trips to Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California.
“There’s a myth that entrepreneurs work by themselves,” Schmidt said. “In fact, they are members of an ecosystem of people who help them.”
Hong Kong’s startup ecosystem is still limited but growing, said analysts. Google spokeswoman Betty Wong said the CUHK partnership should hopefully begin in the coming months.
