Government unveils Smart City Blueprint

This includes the pilot installation of smart lampposts which can collect real-time city data.

The government released on December 15 the Smart City Blueprint for Hong Kong which maps out the city’s development plans in an effort to transition into a world-class smart city in the next five years, according to a press release. 

The blueprint identifies six key areas for development – smart mobility, smart living, smart environment, smart people, smart government and smart economy. 

A Smart City office will be set up under the Innovation & Technology Bureau to monitor the progress and effectiveness of smart city projects.

These projects include a universal e-ID which ensures secure access to both public and private services and transactions. 

Moreover, a total of 400 smart lampposts will also be installed at key urban locations in Causeway Bay, Central/Admiraly, Tsim Sha Tsui and Kwun Tong which can collect real-time city data like weather, crowd flow and transportation.

The government has also vowed to revamp and update its cloud infrastructure platform to keep up with the demands of rolling out smart city projects. 

"We will build a new government big data analytics platform to enhance operation efficiency and e-Government services through big data resource sharing with the aid of artificial intelligence."
