Huawei Technologies might IPO in Hong Kong
China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is considering an IPO in Hong Kong to boost its handsets business in major world markets.
News reports said the world's No.2 telecommunications equipment maker is looking to list in the United States, its largest market, but is also considering Hong Kong or London. Huawei is also the world's sixth-biggest handsets maker.
Huawei, however, has not made any decision about the listing and refused to comment on rumore of its IPO. Huawei has consulted with investment banks for advice on an IPO but has not chosen any banks and nothing had been decided. A source in Huawei said the company hasn't ruled out the possibility of a listing.
Reports said Huawei has been looking at the IPO for years, but has been held back by its complicated company share structure. Huawei also faces the possibility that a listing might not move its market share in the face of undiminished national security concerns by some U.S. lawmakers.
Huawei has been selling handsets in the United States but growth is being stymied by opposition from US lawmakers over security concerns. The Australian government last year cited cyber-security concerns when it forbade Huawei from bidding for contracts to build the country's national broadband network.
