Gov’t approves gazettal of national security bill
The government aims to accelerate the passing of the bill.
The government has approved the gazettal and the legislation of the Safeguarding National Security Bill on 8 March 2024.
The approval of the bill will accelerate HKSAR’s duty to effectively maintain the country’s national security.
The government conducted a public consultation on the Article 23 Basic Law from 30 January to 28 February 2024 which received 98.6% positive responses.
“In order to achieve the goal of completing the legislative work as early as possible, I have suggested LegCo speedily commence the scrutiny of the bill and consider such means as convening a special LegCo meeting for the first and second reading, and convening Bills Committee meetings as early as possible, with a view to scrutinising the bill and completing the legislative process at full speed,” Chief Executive John Lee said.
