Lam promotes Hong Kong's legal services in Kuala Lumpur visit

One highlight of the discussion was Malaysia's need for cross-jurisdictional legal services.

Justice Secretary Paul Lam promoted Hong Kong’s legal services during his visit to Kuala Lumpur, part of a tour of ASEAN member states.

Lam met with Ng Yih Pyng, deputy president of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce & Industry of Malaysia, to discuss Malaysia's need for cross-jurisdictional legal services. He also emphasised Hong Kong's diverse professional offerings.

He also received a briefing from Bilal Parvaiz, CEO of Standard Chartered Malaysia, about Malaysia's business landscape and the financial sector's demand for legal services. Additionally, he met Anand Raj, vice-president of the Malaysian Bar, to discuss legal cooperation between the two regions.

Moreover, Lam visited the Malaysian International Mediation Centre and met with Almalena Sharmila Johan, CEO of the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), to learn about support for arbitration and alternative dispute resolution.

Lam also met with Tan Sri Ahmad Terrirudin bin Mohd Salleh, the Attorney General of Malaysia, and participated in a seminar titled Hong Kong: The Common Law Gateway for Malaysian Businesses to China and Beyond. This was followed by a networking reception organized by the Department of Justice (DoJ) and local chambers of commerce.

He witnessed the signing of two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) facilitated by the DoJ, between the South China International Arbitration Center (HK) and the AIAC, and a supplementary MoU between the eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre and the AIAC.
