Hong Kong tops bicycle sales in online selling platform Carousell
A total of 63,345 bicycle-related transactions were made in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Hong Kong has the most bicycle-related transactions in online selling platform Carousell in three countries, with a total of 40,000 sold in 2020.
Malaysia comes in second place with almost 18,000 sold.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, demand for fitness items spiked in March 2020 with the demand for bicycles growing by 44% in the second half of 2020.
Total searches for bicycles in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore increased by 1.6 times to 18.5 million in 2020. Demand is still growing regionally, with an average of 1.6 million searches for bicycles each month in 2021.
Hong Kong alone sees about 300,000 searches a month, whereas Singapore sees the most interest at over 1 million searches. The most popular bicycle type in Hong Kong is the road bike, similar to Malaysia. Folding bicycles are second most popular in Hong Kong, first in Singapore and third in Malaysia. American brand Dahon is most popular in Hong Kong, whilst Singapore prefers British brand Brompton and Malaysia prefers American brand Specialized.
The survey also found that secondhand bikes were the preferred choice, with 72.46% of transactions for these in Hong Kong.
“Various market reports have projected the bicycle market in Asia Pacific to grow further by 2025. Besides the increased government initiatives and events, the extended pandemic lockdown has pushed demand as people turn towards domestic travel and safer public commuting and exercise options. Seeing a similar trend in demand on Carousell is testament to our relevancy in the Hong Kong market, and shows there is potential for further growth in bicycle sales on our platform for both merchants and casual sellers,” said Carousell co-founder Lucas Ngoo.
