Mobile operators can soon install facilities without fees in new buildings
This is effective starting 1 April 2025.
Mobile network operators authorised by the Communications Authority (CA) can install and maintain mobile communications facilities (MCFs) in newly approved buildings without paying fees to property owners, starting 1 April 2025.
The new rule, outlined in the Telecommunications Ordinance (TO), affects a wide range of structures, including newly built and redeveloped commercial, industrial, residential, and hotel buildings.
Additionally, government buildings and public housing developments will also set aside space for the installation of MCFs under the new arrangement.
The CA has introduced a Code of Practice for the Provision of Mobile Access Facilities in Specified Buildings (Mobile CoP), outlining the required standards for MCF installation.
The Building Authority has also updated its Practice Note (APP-84), specifying space and infrastructure requirements.
Both documents take effect tomorrow, streamlining the process and expanding 5G coverage across Hong Kong.
