HK tops public transit index for affordable transport network: US report

The market has high station density and a strong rail network.

Its affordable mass transport network to serve a large population earned Hong Kong the top spot for public transit index in 2022.

This was according to the Urban Mobility Readiness Index developed by Oliver Wyman Forum, business consulting services firm, and University of California, Berkeley.

Hong Kong received a score of 77.2% for its “high station density and strong rail network.”

“Hong Kong is home to what is widely regarded as one of the most efficient public transit systems in the world, topping the ranks for the Public Transit sub index introduced this year,” read the report.

The report also indicated that Hong Kong may also enhance processes in navigating its transport database.

“But Hong Kong has room for improvement. It lags in autonomous transit and lacks smartphone apps to seamlessly navigate its multimodal network,” read the report.

In the urban mobility readiness index, Hong Kong was 16th place globally. The index evaluates the preparedness of markets for the next chapter in mobility.

The report analyses and ranks over 60 global cities in mobility and public transit.

Public transit's the most eco-friendly way for movement of people and can help entice the needed workers in businesses, the report also showed.
