Hong Kong strictly monitors quality tourism scheme
Non-accredited merchants found to be displaying the QTS sign to receive warning letters from the Tourism Board to demand the immediate removal of sign.
Acting Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So says Quality Tourism-accredited merchants’ service quality is closely monitored to prevent unauthorised use of the Quality Tourism Services decal.
In reply to a query from lawmaker Paul Tse, Mr So said non-accredited merchants found to be displaying the QTS decal will receive warning letters from the Hong Kong Tourism Board to demand the sign’s immediate removal. If they do not comply, the board will take legal action, according to a government report.
Since December 2010, two cases of unauthorised use of the QTS decal were found during inspections. After receiving warning letters from the board, the merchants removed the decals.
Since February, the board has asked the Consumer Council to handle all visitors’ complaints about Hong Kong merchants, whether they are QTS-accredited or not.
The board also arranges surprise visits to QTS-accredited merchants. If service areas are identified for improvement, the board will approach the merchant to offer advice.
Since the QTS scheme’s launch in 1999, more than 7,300 merchants - including retailers, restaurants, hotels and hairdressers - have been accredited.
