Tourism Commission launches City in Time project

The app will integrate augmented reality and multimedia technologies.

The Tourism Commission has released the City in Time tourism project, a mobile app which lets locals and tourists travel through time and enjoy enriched visual and audio experiences through the app in their smartphones by integrating augmented reality (AR) and multimedia technologies.

The mobile app aims to present combinations of historical panoramas and real-life surroundings through its technologies. Locals and tourists can scan the AR markers installed at designated locations using their smartphones with the mobile app to know more about the history of Hong Kong and its spots.

It is also equipped with a selfie function to enable users to share their experiences on social media.

"Despite the disruptions to travel as a result of the epidemic, we will continue to strengthen the appeal of Hong Kong's attractions to prepare for the return of visitors by showcasing the city's distinctive culture and history," Commerce and Economic Development Secretary Edward Yau said.

The first phase of the City in Time project has been rolled out in several designated locations in Central and in Tsim Sha Tsui, with the AR markers installed on redesigned visitor sign poles.
