PCCW upgrades submarine cable for faster Internet
Coherent optical 100G networking solutions will be used to speed up its services in the city.
PCCW Global, a leading Hong Kong telecommunications provider, has upgraded its submarine cable network in the city to speed up its high-bandwidth services.
Using “coherent optical 100G networking solutions,” the upgrade will significantly increase the cable’s capacity on routes interconnecting Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, said PCCW.
This will give clients in Hong Kong faster access to high-bandwidth services and applications such as Internet, video and cloud computing, and enhance global interconnection.
Marc Halbfinger, Chief Executive Officer of PCCW Global, said the network expansion “. . . will significantly enhance the capacity of our network, allowing us to better serve our customers and support the delivery of high-performance data networking services and traffic growth driven by smartphones, high definition video, and sophisticated enterprise connectivity applications such as cloud computing.”
The platforms equipped with “100G submarine-cable-grade coherent line interfaces” from Ciena Corporation are designed to significantly increase submarine cable network capacity without disrupting existing customer traffic or adding cost or complexity to the network.
